About Grade 4 Geography
Grade 4 geography teaches a child to read a map: the key that explains the symbols, the scale that turns centimetres into kilometres, and north at the top of the page.
The second half is about water, and it matters more here than in most countries. South Africa receives less rain than the world average, so where water comes from, how it is cleaned, and why it must be saved are not abstract questions.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between a map and a plan?
Both are drawn looking down from above. A plan shows a small area in detail — a classroom or a house. A map shows a large area — a town, a country, the world.
What must a map always have?
A title, a key, a scale and a north arrow. Take away any one and the map cannot be used properly, and the paper asks about each of them.
Why is there so much about water?
Because South Africa is a dry country. The curriculum treats water as a resource to understand and protect, not just a topic to memorise.
Are these the same questions as in our PDF papers?
No. These are separate, original questions covering the same CAPS content.
