About Grade 5 NST
Grade 5 gives names to things that Grade 4 only described. A plant no longer simply makes food — the process is called photosynthesis, and a child must know which three things it needs and which gas it gives off.
Two other things are new. Food chains become food webs, because in nature most animals eat more than one thing. And matter goes beyond solid, liquid and gas: a child must now know how to separate a mixture, and why a filter works for sand but not for salt.

What is new compared with Grade 4?

My child confuses dissolving and melting.
Melting is when a solid gets hot and becomes a liquid itself, like ice. Dissolving is when a substance spreads through a liquid and disappears from sight, like sugar in tea — but the sugar is still there.
Which topic carries the most marks?
Photosynthesis and food webs together. Both are about where energy comes from and where it goes, and that thread runs through the whole paper.
