About Grade 7 Afrikaans
Senior Phase, but still First Additional Language. The passages are longer and the structures harder than in Grade 6.
Two things carry most of the marks. The past tense follows one reliable pattern — het plus ge-, with the verb going to the end. And the double negative needs two nies, the second always closing the sentence.
The third trap is word order. After omdat the verb moves to the end of the clause; after want it does not. Both mean 'because', and the paper tests exactly that difference.
Frequently asked questions
How does the Afrikaans past tense work?
Almost always with het plus ge-, and the ge- verb goes to the end: Ek het gister rugby gespeel. The exceptions to learn are is which becomes was, and hê which becomes het gehad.
Why does Afrikaans need two nies?
It is a feature of the language's sentence structure. The closing nie always comes last, even in a long sentence, and leaving it out is marked wrong.
What is the difference between want and omdat?
Both mean 'because', but the word order differs. … want sy wás siek keeps normal order; … omdat sy siek wás pushes the verb to the end.
