About Grade 5 Geography
Grade 5 geography goes wider than Grade 4's. Where Grade 4 began with the child's own town, Grade 5 looks at the whole of South Africa: where the mountains and rivers lie, why the east coast is wet and the west coast dry, and what is mined underground.
The distinction that costs the most marks is the one between weather and climate. Weather is today; climate is the pattern over decades. A child who says 'the climate is hot today' has confused the two, and the paper tests exactly that difference.
Map skills also get finer. The compass now has eight directions instead of four, and a child must be able to use the scale to work out real distance.
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between weather and climate?
Weather is what is happening outside at this moment and can be completely different tomorrow. Climate is the average pattern of a region over many years. The Karoo's climate is dry, even on a day when it rains there.
Why is the Western Cape different from the rest of the country?
Most of South Africa gets summer rainfall. The Western Cape gets winter rainfall and has dry summers — a Mediterranean climate. It is a favourite question in the paper.
Must my child know all the provinces and rivers?
The major features, yes: the two oceans, the Drakensberg, the Karoo, the Orange River and where their own province lies. The paper does not ask for a complete list from memory.
