About Grade 7 Technology

In the Senior Phase Technology stands on its own, with its own paper. The backbone of the subject is the design process: investigate, design, make, evaluate, communicate — in that order, and the order is not accidental.

The two concepts that cost the most marks are specifications and constraints. Specifications say what the product must do; constraints say what limits your choices — time, money, available material. A child who can tell them apart can analyse any design brief.

For mechanisms there is one rule that explains everything: a mechanism trades force for distance. Less force always means more movement. Nothing is free, which is why a lower gear makes pedalling easier but slower.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between specifications and constraints?

Specifications describe the product: how much weight it must carry, how big it may be. Constraints describe the circumstances: how much time, how much money, which materials are available. Both are asked in the paper.

Why is a triangle so important in structures?

A triangle cannot change shape without one side changing length. A square can easily become a rhombus. That is why you see triangles in bridges, roofs and cranes.

What should my child remember about mechanisms?

That a mechanism trades force for distance. Move the fulcrum closer to the load and you need less force, but you must move further. The energy stays the same.

Are these the same questions as in our PDF papers?

No. These are separate, original questions covering the same CAPS content.
