About Grade 7 English
In the Senior Phase reading becomes interpretation. The passages rarely state their point outright — the meaning sits in a contrast, a short sentence standing alone, or something deliberately left unsaid.
On the language side the three hard ones are reported speech, the difference between a phrase and a clause, and the conditionals: if it rains, we will stay in against if I were rich, I would travel.
Frequently asked questions
What trips learners up most in reported speech?
Changing the pronouns. Dropping the quotation marks is the easy part; 'I' becoming 'he' and 'tomorrow' becoming 'the next day' is where the marks go.
What is the difference between the first and second conditional?
The first describes something that really can happen: If it rains, we will stay inside. The second describes something imaginary, and the tense shifts back: If I were rich, I would travel. Note were, not was.
What is the difference between a phrase and a clause?
A clause has a verb (when she arrived); a phrase does not (under the table). Once a child looks for the verb, the question becomes easy.
