About Grade 5 exam papers
Grade 5 exam papers and memos follow the CAPS curriculum, and most subjects are written in two parts. This is how each subject is split: English Home Language (Section A: Reading, comprehension and vocabulary; Section B: Language structures and conventions); Afrikaans First Additional Language (Section A: Reading, comprehension and vocabulary; Section B: Language structures); Natural Sciences and Technology (Paper 1: Life, living and matter; Paper 2: Energy, Earth and technology); Social Sciences: History (Paper 1: South Africa's earliest people and farmers; Paper 2: Ancient Egypt and heritage); Social Sciences: Geography (Paper 1: Maps, direction and physical features; Paper 2: Weather, climate and mining); Life Skills (Paper 1: Feelings, safety and health; Paper 2: Rights, the environment and case studies). In maths, Paper 1 covers numbers, operations and patterns, and Paper 2 space, measurement and data handling.
The tests above cover all 65 topics with 1631 questions, including Reading and comprehension, Plants and photosynthesis, Hunter-gatherers, Map skills and Feelings and self-image. Every question comes with an explanation, and the topics are grouped by Paper 1 and 2, like the school’s exam timetable, and checked against real Grade 5 papers.
